Lambing Experience

Lambing Experience

In April 2014 I went to Oxfordshire for two weeks to do a lambing placement- I stayed there with the family who lived at the farm for the two weeks which was so lovely 🙂 Whilst there I was involved in lots of different things including feeding the lambs which had been abandoned by the mum or whose mum had had too many lambs so we had to take away the smallest one, spraying the lambs so that we could identify them, castrating the lambs with rubber rings and a few other things 🙂 Although it was a 5.30 start everyday I had an excellent time and learnt so many things! At the farm there were around 300+ ewes most of whom were having 2 lambs although there were a few who had more than that who had to be housed inside so that we could keep an eye on them. Every morning I would feed the orphaned lambs and then go out with the farmer to drive around the fields, check on all the ewes and see if any new lambs had been born overnight, if they had we would gather up the newly born lambs, castrate and spray them and make sure they were healthy 🙂 It was a completely new experience for me because I was not used to working with farm animals but I quickly got the hang of things and was eager to learn 🙂
